Keynote Title: BIM for Smart Engineering

Prof. Haijiang LI is a Chair Professor in Smart Engineering, Director of BIM for Smart Engineering MSc programme, Lab and Centre, Cardiff University, United Kingdom.

Prof. Li’s research focuses on a new generation smart engineering computing platform, underpinned by High Performance Computing (HPC & Cloud Computing), inter-linked domain knowledge (Ontology Modelling), Artificial Intelligence algorithms and BIM (Building Information Modelling) based standardization across sectors throughout project life cycle, to support large scale engineering data / information / knowledge processing, smart engineering optimization and holistic decision making to help to achieve sustainable and resilient built environment.

As a Principle / Co-Investigator, the total project value is about £32M (£7M as PI, funding sources include EPSRC, NERC, EU FP7/H2020; participated National Natural Science Foundation of China - NSFC, China National 973 project, China National Grand Plan 2016 Green Construction - total value: ¥105M). He has published more than 140 publications, leading a BIM team consisting of 45+ RAs / PhDs in total since 2006, and top-class BIM & VR (Virtual Reality) laboratories both in UK and China.

Prof. Li is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Automation in Construction (Elsevier Publishing, impact factor: 5.669); the Editor for the Journal of Construction Innovation (ESCI). He serves as editorial board members for other three international journals; reviewers for EPSRC, NSERC (Canada) and 40+ international journals and conferences (as scientific committees / chairs); he delivered 50+ invited / keynote speeches in UK, EU, China and USA. He is a Fellow of British Computer Society, member of EPSRC Associate Peer Review College; actively engaged with most of the major international communities on BIM and ICT in AEC domain, e.g. EG-ICE, ICCCBE, CIBW78, ECPPM and ASCE. He also serves as Standards Committee Technical Executive (SCTE) for buildingSMART international. In China, Prof. Li serves as guest professors for several top universities, and a Chief guest BIM scientist for China State Construction Engineering & China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), playing an influential role there helping China to transform their construction (a book published in 2019 - "CHINA, USA & UK BIM STANDARDS AND POLICY").

Keynote Abstract

To achieve the ultimate sustainability when facing the massive scale built and managed environment, it demands new way of surveying, planning, designing, constructing, monitoring and operating for the relevant supporting infrastructure systems, which should be human centred, interfacing intelligently between physical world and their digital representations. The new generation Smart Engineering approach needs to move from domain specific decision making towards truly holistic systems engineering; it also needs to address the new data era that we are currently entering, we need new ways at a massive scale covering both micro and macro levels, to model, analyse, simulate, monitor, and respond in real time in order to achieve better sustainable built and managed environment. Meanwhile, our entire built environment is becoming “computable” due to the new generation computing technology developments. We have developed the means to “feel and monitor (Virtual Reality, IoT and Digital Twins)”, to “store and analyse (Cloud & Big Data Analytics)” for the built environment, we need to go further to orchestrate these instruments to provide truly holistic decision making capability, which can respond smartly, proactively and timely based on the computable domain knowledge, through Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, simulation & optimization underpinned by High power and smart computing.
